A "sponge oasis" for the main street in Freilassing sums up the objectives for the redesign in terms of content: bioclimatically adapted, with new experiences for all generations and flexibly designed with a view to future transformations.

Congratulations to our designers: Franz Damm, Prof. Silvia Benedito and Laura Stoib.

Concept
With the inclusion of the numerous existing lime trees and some new plantings, the Prinzip der unterirdisch angelegten Baumrigole (symbolised on the plan by rectangles under the trees) is a guiding principle of the design. In this way, the concept of the sponge city (collecting and storing rainwater locally in cities instead of channelling and draining it) is to be experienced by all residents in a completely natural way and become part of everyday life. The collection and storage function of the tree trenches below tree roots can also be applied to existing trees.

The experience for all generations is enriched by planting areas under the trees, which take up motifs from the local flora of the surrounding meadows and pastures as well as the nearby Alps. Fountains set at ground level or in a raised position bring water as an invigorating and microclimatically cooling element between the façades of the main street. They serve as a varied backdrop for lingering, playing, eating, shopping and strolling.

Seven sub-areas convey the idea of a journey along the course of the street with different design means and possibilities for the users:
(1) Salzburg Square
(2) Interactive play area
(3) Snack area
(4) Quiet space
(5) Weekly market
(6) Park area
(7) Square at the alpine view
