Park Taubenloch

The design for the Taubenloch park in Bad Tölz envisaged visually opening up the existing park and creating a direct link to the Isar flowing past by removing hedges and fences running parallel to the riverbank. In addition, the embankment was made accessible to visitors and equipped with seating in the form of boulders and seating walls.

Existing and further development
The design for the Taubenloch park in Bad Tölz envisaged opening up the existing park visually and creating a direct link to the Isar River flowing past, by removing hedges and fences running parallel to the riverbank. In addition, the embankment was made accessible to visitors and equipped with seating in the form of boulders and seating walls.

In order to reduce injury and to protect the roots of existing trees, the soil on the trees was first mechanically vacuumed and then the placement of the surface layers was done by hand in the root area. Another protective measure taken, was using minimally invasive metal screw anchors in the construction of the seating walls.

Embankment
In the area of the Taubenloch and the inner city of Bad Tölz, the Isar River draws a long loop and has over the years formed a consolidated impact bank. The movement and power of the water is exposed by washing free underlying layers of stone. The riverbank is made visible by disclosed bands of “Nagelfluh” (stamped concrete) and embedded, oversized river pebbles. These elements structure the bank and now allow people to sit on and above the water level. The water can be accessed by the flattened embankment and embedded barrier-free ramp and stairs.

By modeling the slope and paths along the edge of the bank, the water is now accessible to all. The embankment facing the Isar is landscaped with a robust, walkable mix of groundcover plants and grasses.

Striking reception
In the entrance area, near Säggasse, a particularly large boulder welcomes visitors as an eye-catcher. The block of dolomite stone, which measures 4 x 2 x 2 meters and weighs 35 tons, was previously found during another construction project in Bad Tölz. From the entrance, a promenade leads along the bank under the impressive existing tree formation to the rear park area.

Playground
For the children, various small and larger areas were created on the exis>ng playground, and for parents and caregivers, individual seating groups were created that also allow for picnics together. A planting of wild shrubs and bushes frames the play area, creating exciting play spaces while increasingbiodiversity. Plants, wood and stones can be incorporated into imaginative play.

Materiality
The choice of materials and their processing establishes a clear reference to the geology of the foothills of the Alps: gravel, sand and crushed stone - material shaped and altered by the Isar River. Individual walls of stamped concrete run along the embankment. Due to the treatment of the surfaces, they look like the “Nagelfluh”formations in the surrounding area. Natural stone boulders were placed in the embankment as oversized river pebbles. The paths of the park are designed as water-bound pavement.

Tree protection/details
In the area of the park promenade, in order to reduce injury and to protect the roots of existing trees, the soil on the trees was first mechanically vacuumed and then the placement of the surface layers was done by hand in the root area. Another protective measure taken was minimally invasive metal screw anchors used in the construction of the seating walls.
