Botanical Garden Dahlem, Berlin

With its over forty-three hectares and around 22`000 different species of plants, the Botanical Garden in Berlin is the biggest botanical garden in Germany. It belongs to the Freie Universität Berlin and has the status of a central institution independent of the faculties. “The world in one garden” was the basic concept behind the establishment of the Botanical Garden at its new location in Berlin-Dahlem, which opened in 1904. More than one hundred years later, the garden is still among the top five in the world, but with around 300,000 visitors each year, the potential is a far from exhausted. Following the renovation of the big greenhouses, from 2006 to 2015, and the development of the “Marketing and Public Relations” area, the focus is now on realizing extensive measures to improve access for tourists and the infrastructure of the Botanical Garden. Here, Hager Partner is designing and coordinating the most extensive aspect of the overall measure, the open-air facilities, in a team of specialist planners. The goal of the project is considerably improving access for tourists by sustainably highlighting the garden with its unique features. They include, for instance, the construction of a new visitor center, the basic renewal of the paths in the Botanical Garden, the redesigning of various ornamental garden areas, and setting up a modern visitor guidance and information system.
