Bodmergut gardens

A journey through time and the senses: Barrier-free learning, discovering and lingering in a restored yield garden and a historic house from 1768.

The "Obere Schönberg", built in 1643-47, is today named after its most famous resident, J.J. Bodmer (1698-1783). The house and garden were located outside the medieval but inside the Baroque town fortifications and were altered several times.

Following the recent restoration, it is once again enclosed on all sides by hedges and fences. The garden is characterized by four different rooms. The entrance on Schönberggasse is dominated by the magnificent old lime tree. Paths edged with stone slabs lead into and through the area planted with poplars. Shady lawns brighten up the atmosphere. In front of the south façade is a small 'lawn parterre' with a central path and a central flower bed. To the west, a terrace accentuates the view over the city, shaded by a second, somewhat younger, giant lime tree. The terraced vegetable garden has been restored and the seating area adjacent to the house has been enlarged to provide more space for the new public use by the university. Vines are once again growing on the facades. The orchard facing the 'Schneggli' was newly planted. The fruit trees planted on raised lawns once again create a very special atmosphere.

Overall, the garden tells of a tranquil, Biedermeier, secluded life in the countryside - in the middle of the city. The intensive elaboration of the house and garden allows the Bodmergut 'jewel' to stand up confidently against the two neighboring magnificent buildings, the baroque 'Rechberg' and the college building.
