Werk 1

The inner courtyard on the Sulzer site refers to the industrial past and the reclaiming of abandoned areas. Flexibility and ecology promote biodiversity, improve the urban climate and create a green oasis for all generations.

The green inner courtyard on the former Sulzer site is reminiscent of the industrial past. Abandoned areas are reclaimed by nature, while the blurred edges of the plant islands allow for flexible adaptations. Despite the underground parking garage below, the dense greenery contributes to a better urban climate, promotes urban biodiversity and forms a near-natural stepping stone in the central Lokstadt district. Ecologically enhanced roof surfaces provide a habitat for insects and birds. The roof water is directed into the planted areas via open gutters. Diverse vegetation, bees, butterflies and wall and alpine swifts colonize the little-used areas. Dense planting and secluded niches invite the colorful mix of residents, from young to old, from cooperatives to condominiums, to use the courtyard together, to discover and linger. The inner courtyard forms a green oasis in the dense urban fabric - the diversity of the spaces creates an awareness of the interplay between intergenerational urban life and nature.
