Baroque Garden Palais Rechberg Zürich

The Baroque palace garden from the second half of the 18th century is regarded as one of the most magnificent in the City of Zurich. Since its creation, it has often been remo¬deled. After the university nursery moved out in 1985, the old growing beds were discontinued and the whole garden was opened to the public. The walls, grassy slopes and trees that are important from a historical preservation perspective are protected as original substance from the various stages of construction and have been carefully restored. Additional elements and plantings have been added to the garden based on its historical model but in a contemporary language. Since 1992, vines, pear espaliers, sour cherries and flowers have been grown in beds framed with boxwood. The array of flowers is re-designed in color each year. The enormous horticultural effort is possible thanks to the university’s own nursery. The Rechberg garden serves as a place for rest and relaxation in the midst of the busy city. The magnificent orna¬mental garden tells not only of old Zurich but also of changing garden fashions.
