Bahnhofplatz St.Gallen

The introduction of a flow system for buses increases the capacity at the edges of the platforms and facilitates the redesigning of the square in front of the train station. The compact organization of public transport makes the cramped circumstances become more generous. Various open spaces with areas for waiting and spending time are defined by the different structures. With its translucent luminosity, light, and weightlessness, the new arrival hall between the train station building and the Rathaus (town hall) creates a deliberate contrast to the architecture of the massive, existing buildings on the square. A wide pedestrian crossing leads to Kornhausplatz, the central, tree-canopied meeting place. The platforms with their high, light-suffused waiting hall are arranged on both sides of the crossing.
