Mattenhof Nursing Center, Zürich

The municipal nursing center from 1975 has been refurbished and upgraded. The original appearance of the surroundings with the qualities developed at the time were still partially present, but had been somewhat watered down and required careful adaptation to the contemporary needs of a modern nursing center. It was necessary to accept what exists, to reveal potentials and qualities, and to further develop them into image bearers for the site. The existing “locations” are being supplemented with new ones. What these locations have in common is the motif of a grove of trees. Various uses take place under them: at the main entrance, there is an area to sit with a pool of water and plant troughs under pagoda trees; in the southwest, a rose garden with cypress oaks brings pleasure; in the southeast, an animal enclosure is situated in a grove of ornamental cherry trees; and a large place to spend time in the east has a play area under the existing spruce trees. In the north, an outdoor fitness facility stands under cornelian cherry trees. There are closed gardens directly next to the ground floor room for residents with dementia. Islands of green planted in diverse ways bring pleasure with their blooming aspects distributed throughout the year.
