Station square

A square with reduced traffic, which radiates an elegant expansiveness with its light-colored surface and the high-crowned plane trees, connects the city and the lake.

Bahnhofsplatz Contance is situated between the city and the lake and is located on the outskirts of the old town context. The goal of the new design is to strengthen the space around the train station in its importance as a link between the city and the lake, and to once again bring the city closer to the lake.
Bahnhofplatz is clearly composed, from an urban perspective, by means of clearly readable edges of the space. Bahnhofplatz is demarcated by Marktstätte to the north and by Bodanstrasse to the south. These spaces are given precedence as an important link to the lake. A contiguous surfacing consisting of large-format concrete slabs connects the individual areas of the square with one another and defines the square with a uniform, homogeneous surface. A guidance system for the blind also guarantees orientation for individuals with impaired vision.
A canopy of trees is spanned over the area of the square. The positioning of the trees provides an open space in the center of the square that stages the historically valuable ensemble of the train station building and the Fürstenpavillon (royal pavilion). The bus stops become located in the new “train station window”. On the “old town side”, the canopy of trees can unfold in the form of a generous promenade. Here, the movements of pedestrians can be concentrated and distributed to the adjoining urban spaces. Benches under the trees invite sojourning for a time.
