Open Space Management

The city of Winterthur has stored all maintenance plans for its open spaces in the GIS. They have commissioned us to scrutinise them with regard to possible developments by means of maintenance adjustments, to show the potential and to visualise it for ongoing maintenance.

The potential for improvement by means of maintenance was worked out for more than 150 sites. After the inspection of the site and recording in a digital record sheet, corresponding development concepts were drawn up. The development concept consists of a data sheet and a plan, which shows the following most important criteria:

- Areal measures with changes in maintenance
- Areal measures with preservation of maintenance
- Important woody plants or elements worth preserving
- Disturbing woody plants or elements to be removed
- Corrections to the areas
- Important visual axes
- Areas requiring further planning

The development goals were discussed and approved with the responsible persons in the municipal gardening department, taking into account design, functional and ecological aspects. The results, in turn, have been assigned to the individual plots in the GIS and can now be called up for the daily work of the City Horticulture.
